The best laptop last year we called the Asus Rog Strix Hero II. Today on the tests of its direct descendant – Rog Strix Scar III. And as ASUS claims, this is not just a top -end filling, but also a cool design, and thoughtful control, and even a physical access key to a laptop.

Appearance

A laptop is supplied in a small box, which at the opening slightly lifts the system as if on a pedestal. Inside-a traditional power supply, a suitable mouse and an external webcam. The latter can be fixed both over the screen and put on a tripod. And she removes much better than built -in "soap dishes".

The laptop itself is a tribute to minimalism. Sharp faces, correct shapes and coal-black color. The case is made of plastic, and the lid is covered with a sheet of metal with a double grinding traditional for ASUS. Backlight, as usual, sea. The keyboard and logo on the lid are glowing, and even the lower part of the laptop. Naturally, you can choose any color, make the bulbs flash, shimmer or respond to sounds in the game, and for those who do not need all this, there are brightness control keys and the option “disconnect everything”.

In size, a laptop is small. At least, taking into account that there is an eight-core processor inside, RTX 2070 and 17 inches screen there. Due to the thin frames around the display, the housing met 40 cm in width and 2.6 cm in height. Purely for reference, very thin laptops of Zephyrus level – this is 2 cm in height. But the weight pumped up. The laptop itself weighs modestly – 2.85 kg, but charging is drawn to it for more than a kilo. Interesting in ASUS entered with connectors. Usually the ports are scattered on the sides of the car. We consider it normal, but in ASUS everything redeemed everything. Screen and control

They have already said about the subtle framework of the screen. Here we clarify that the width on the sides and on top of only 7.5 mm. In general, this is already a standard for modern machines, but it still looks cool. The screen itself is also the novelty of 2019. This is IPS on Full HD and a speed of 240 Hz. And today it is a maximum for game display. Yes, at the IFA this fall has already been talked about 300 Hz, but this is so far conversations.

Who and why is such a matrix? E -sportsmen and those who attribute themselves to them. We do not see a huge difference between 144 and 240 Hz. ASUS management also imprisoned for players. The touchpad stands a little to the left of the center, which we personally like much more. The panel itself is large – 108×59 mm – and equipped with two separate buttons. And this, as we have repeatedly said, is a prerequisite for the game machine.

On the keyboard, the alignment is such. It is a full -size island type and with a dedicated digital block on the right. The keys are large, 15.5 mm, with a course of 1.6 mm and the distance between the caps of 3.5 mm. In the human language – you do not miss the buttons and you do not get there. Naturally, all keys are independent and not limited by the number of combinations. That is, this is not an office option where, during running and a strip to the left, “reloading” or “use” are blocked. Plus, all buttons are equipped with Overstroke technology, which counts the press by about half the move and eliminates the misclies.

We note right there that on top of the left is an additional key block. They adjust the volume, turn off the microphone, unwind the fans and start the Armory CRATE control program. Of the pleasant little things: Asus allocated the shooter block and broke the F-box into groups of four keys.

Well, of course, the laptop is stuffed with software. The sound is the Sonic Studio 3 program with equalizers, presets for different occasions and virtual radar. To control the networks there is a utility GameFirst IV. Well, for tuning fans and performance level – traditional Armory CRate.

Internal device

Let's go around the iron. Heads of the Intel Core i9-9880h processor head. This is the last generation of Intel, 14 Nm, eight nuclei and 16 streams. Promised frequencies – from 2.3 to 4.8 GHz. There are two video cards. One – built into the UHD Graphics 630 processor. And it is mostly here to save battery charge. And the second is Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. A full copy of the home chip, with 6 GB of memory GDDR6 and without any restrictions like Max-Q. RAM in our version there were two strips of 16 GB and a frequency of 2666 MHz. Similarly with drives. The drive was one-NVME for 1 TB-but if you wish, you can add another 2.5-inch disk to it.

Two chips are responsible for the networks. On the "wire" is a familiar Intel at 1 Gbit. But on the "air" – the brand new Intel AC 9560 with WiFi 6. And if the apartment has a router with a new standard, then the speed can reach 1 GB/s. At the same time, if a scheme of two antennas is usually used in laptops, then ASUS set four. They are located around the perimeter of the case and, in theory, must be more sure to keep the signal. It sounds beautiful, but in tests the signal level on Strix is ​​the same as on a good office laptop.

Two speakers are responsible for the sound on the sides of the case. They play as far as possible for a laptop, good – loudly and without wheezing. Technically, the standard for all the Realtek Alc294 chip is paired with a branded headphone amplifier. The latter, respectively, pulls even high -resistance models.

Everything is cooling well. Processor and video card through copper tubes give heat to three radiators. And those, in turn, are blown out by two turbines that throw air not only back, but also on the sides. Note that in each radiator there is a channel throwing large dust. And the fans here are metal and, according to Asus, create a more powerful stream than on previous models. How to check it – we do not know. But let's say that the turntables sound noble. Loudly and without a nasty squeak.

Test results

Let's tell you what this is enough for. The video card takes almost desktop frequencies. The chip is 1875 MHz at a normal temperature of 80 ° C. The processor depends on the type of load. If you score all the nuclei, it turns out 3.5-3.6 GHz. In real modes, when part of the nuclei is not used 100%, 4.2 GHz comes out. The temperature does not rise above 83 ° C. For the laptop, the indicator is absolutely normal, although if ASUS made the legs a little longer and raised the back, then the temperature would be even lower.

Ligament performance is enough for all modern games. The third Borderlands and the last Total War give out 61 frames per second, The Division 2 – 75, Shadow of the Tomb Raider – 83. Sometimes the counter falls below 60, but this applies only to Metro Exodus, as well as the Ray Tracing on. For example, in Control he drops the bar from 60 to 38 frames. But what about 240 Hz? According to World of Tanks tests, the processor provides them, but in games with the level of CS: Go, War Thunder or Starcraft 2.

But we have questions for the battery. Everything is fine in time. Four hours of films and hour games. But only 20 watts come to the processor from the battery, which are enough for a maximum of 2 GHz. And this is as you know, there are too few for games in marching mode.

Conclusions

If we talk about technical characteristics and performance, Scar is not much different from competitors. Yes, ASUS has maintained the balance of "noise/temperature/frequency", but in this matter everyone. They distinguish between Scar Little things and interesting chips, which just turn this model into one of the best in the market.
